When someone is in a car accident it can be a very stressful and chaotic time. Not only are you dealing with the damage to your car and potential time off work, but many times you are dealing with pain and recovery from injuries sustained in the car accident.
Over the next few weeks we are going to be writing weekly about all of the things you need to be aware of and to do if you have been in an auto accident.
Probably THE most important thing you should do after an auto accident is … to get into our office to be and be evaluated for any potential injuries ASAP.
We see too many people who wait waiting to get started with treatment. Delaying treatment can impact how quickly you can recover. We see it all the time, someone comes in our office 4-6 weeks after an accident and tell us they thought the pain would go away. Well it didn’t but the pain actually become worse!
Now because they waited to get treatment … an injury that could’ve potentially been healed in just a few short weeks, now could take months to completely resolve.
Here are a few reasons that people wait to be evaluated after an accident:
- The pain isn’t that bad, and they think it will just go away on its own
- They don’t have money to pay for an evaluation
- They don’t have a vehicle to come to an evaluation
- The insurance company is telling them to wait
Here is a short answer to each of these concerns.
Regardless of the severity of the pain you are having – you should come in. Any sort of pain, tightness or stiffness is symptom that you have been injured. If you have an injury, then get it evaluated and documented ASAP.
In Utah, by law, EVERYONE has coverage for injuries related to an auto accident. It is called PIP benefits and it is on your auto insurance. I will go over this in more detail in another post. To keep this short … you pay NOTHING to come and get it looked at.
If your car is damaged or getting fixed and you do not have transportation, then call our office we offer FREE transportation to and from your appointments in our office.
Lastly, never let an insurance adjuster influence you to not get looked at or get treatment after an auto accident. If that is occurring, please let us know and we can help you handle that situation.
